Discarded biomass biofuel fuels fire near Cypriot cement factory

July 5, 2017 |

In Cyprus, solid biofuel has been found to be the culprit for the fire that broke out at near the Vassiliko cement factory. The company uses the fuel in conjunction with discarded electricity poles to power operations, but fuel was found to be scattered around the area. High temperatures likely caused the fire to begin and then spread quickly due to the presence of biomass. A fire station does not currently directly serve the area but one is under development that should be online in 2019.
