Romania to double bioethanol blending mandate for 2018

July 22, 2017 |

In Romania, the European Renewable Energy Directive is expecting declines in bioethanol production for 2017 while increasing Romania’s bioethanol blending mandate from 4.5 percent to 8 percent in 2018. Romania’s blending mandate hasn’t changed since 2014 and they only have one bioethanol plant producing 80,000 metric tons per year. The plant produces bioethanol from corn and has been running on minimal production and has had financial problems.

The good news is Romania, along with 10 other European Union member states, is ahead of the game in meeting its renewable energy consumption goal for 2020, having reached, and surpassed, Romania’s 24 percent renewable energy goal by 2015.
