Brazil willing to sacrifice sugar in exchange for ethanol access to Europe

In Belgium, Brazil said last week during EU-Mercosur negotiations that it is willing to put aside demands for additional sugar market access if it is granted markets for ethanol and beef. Pressure is on to get the deal done by year’s end in light of Brexit and the US Administration’s shift in trade priorities away from regional partners such as Mercosur, but Brazil is insistent on “open access” for ethanol in order to achieve those goals.
