Canada’s clean fuel standard proposal to be delayed a few months

November 8, 2017 |

In Canada, the proposal for a clean fuel standard aiming to reduce carbon emissions in transportation by 30 million metric tons by 2030 and in turn boost demand for biofuels through increased blending mandates has been postponed for a few months beyond the expected Christmas deadline. The policy was expected to be ready for implementation in mid-2018 but that too will be pushed back.

Working with Navius Research, Clean Energy Canada designed a version of the Clean Fuel Standard in line with the federal government’s plans for the policy with the goal to determine what this policy would mean for Canadians. The study found that a well-designed Clean Fuel Standard—informed by experience with similar policies in California and B.C.—would not only help Canada cut pollution in keeping with our commitment under the Paris Agreement, it would create jobs in Canada’s clean fuel sector and grow a new segment of the economy. The Clean Fuel Standard is, in short, a powerful and proven policy.
