In Belgium, the legislative process towards the new Renewable Energy Directive post-2020 took a step backwards last week when not only center right and rightwing members of the European Parliament’s transportation committee voted against the proposal that would phase out conventional biofuels and the use of palm oil completely but socialists and democrats also voted it down, saying the committee’s version had been weakened too far. As the vote isn’t binding, the S&D group used the vote as an opportunity to show what it can do if it doesn’t agree with the direction policy is going.
