Tokyo’s cherry trees lit with UCO biodiesel-powered pink LED “blossoms” for holiday season

December 4, 2017 |

In Japan, biodiesel produced from used cooking oil will be used to power more than 420,000 pink LED lights in cherry trees along 2.2km of road in Tokyo’s Meguro river, meant to resemble the famous cherry blossoms the attract visitors from around the world every spring. The demonstration began seven years ago after the Fukushima nuclear disaster when organizers wanted to show that energy could be produced and supplied locally and sustainably. About 5,400 liters of UCO are collected from restaurants and homes along the river that is then converted into biodiesel for the light display.
