New DEFRA data shows UK bioenergy crop production rose 41% in 2016

In the UK, Farmers Weekly is highlighting new data from the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs showing that bioenergy crop production rose 41% in 2016 to an all-time high of 132,000ha, with corn and wheat taking up the majority of the acreage. Even so, bioenergy crops still only account for 2.2% of arable land nationwide. Sugarbeet area for ethanol production rose 60% during 2016 even though most ethanol in the country is produced from wheat. Using beet probably dropped off after sugar prices began to rise, making wheat more competitive again.
