Green Plains jumps into tax loophole and creates cooperative

In Kansas, Green Plains has jumped on the opportunity provided by the new tax reform and created a cooperative to take advantage of tax benefits provided under the new laws—at least in the short term until it undoubtedly gets reformed again. But with farmers forward selling up to a quarter of their crop, the company wanted to get ahead in time to secure what they could. The company that consumes about 3% of the national corn crop to produce upwards of 1.5 billion gallons of ethanol says it doesn’t intend to recast the company as a cooperative as such but is just taking advantage of a tax loophole.
