greenGain completes their Horizon2020 project on biomass

February 25, 2018 |

In Germany, project greenGain, which was funded by the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme of the European Union, completed their study of herbaceous and woody biomass from landscape conservation and maintenance work (LCMW) for energy production as an alternative to the cultivation of energy plants that can compete for food or nature conservation.

The project showed that the potential of landscape conservation material is relevant as an additional energy source and should not be neglected as a biomass for energy production. Surely, this raw material cannot be used in quantity as the sole source. However, the pilot studies have shown that it can be well integrated into existing production chains to drive the energy transition in Europe.

Eight institutions from Germany, Italy, Spain and the Czech Republic participated, including research institutions, chambers of agriculture and associations. The Agency for Renewable Resources e.V. (FNR) coordinated this project.
