European farmers want conventional biofuels included in new “protein strategy”

February 26, 2018 |

In Belgium, Euractive reports that European farmers are urging the European Commission to keep conventional biofuels in mind as part of the upcoming “protein strategy.” A third of the EU’s animal feed 45 million metric tons consumed annually is from soybeans, of which only 5% is produced within Europe. The rest is imported, and poses challenges due to the EU’s strict GMO regulations. As much as 15% of import demand for protein is eliminated due to co-products from conventional biofuels but a limit on those biofuels of 7% and 3.8% by 2030 will reduce that availability and the bloc’s ability to be self-sufficient in protein.
