Chinese ethanol imports soar to 120,702 cu m in January thanks to cheap ethanol

February 28, 2018 |

In China, Platts reports customs data showing ethanol imports in January soared to 120,702 cu m, the highest in 13 months and on the other end of the spectrum from the 33 cu m imported in December. The 30% import duty on ethanol imports implemented in January 2017 brought trade almost to a halt but cheap US ethanol meant arbitrage was possible in large volumes even with the duty in place. All but 4 cu m of denatured ethanol was imported from the US while all but 10 cu m of undenatured ethanol came from Pakistan.
