Biofuels blamed for pollution in Mumbai

May 6, 2018 |

In India, data gathered by the System of Air Quality Weather Forecasting and Research shows that Mumbai’s air quality was worse in 2017 than 2016 and 2015, partially due to the burning of biofuels, as well as vehicular emissions.

The SAFAR study showed that the contribution of the emissions from slums was 27.05%, 21.2% was from suspended dust, and 35.82% was from industries and the power sector.

“The sector-wise figures would not have changed substantially though it’s a 2016 study and one has to understand that apart from industries, the main contributor is biofuels being burnt in slum areas and dust, which needs to be tackled to improve the AQI,” said Gufran Beig, Project Director at SAFAR, told Daily News and Analysis.
