Oyster X SmartSink soil amendment launched to conserve water and carbon storage

June 24, 2018 |

In California, Riverbend Park soccer fields are getting a new soil amendment to help conserve water and carbon storage that is made by Living X Elements. The soil amendment called Oyster X SmartSink is made from pine trees killed by bark beetles and mimics an oyster which can filter up to 50 gallons of water a day through its body. The fields are being reconstructed after they were damaged from the Oroville Dam spillway crisis of February 2017 that caused flooding.

Greg Melton, principal landscape architect for Melton Design Group, told Enterprise Record he expected to see about a 30 percent reduction in water use and a 70 percent savings in maintenance costs. “A lot of sustainable companies want this,” Melton said, adding that these would be the first soccer fields with the specific soil amendment.

Producer of Oyster X SmartSink, Living X Elements, debuted its product at the Sustainable Brands show in Vancouver, British Columbia, earlier this month. The company said in a press release that it will track water savings, carbon storage and soil health and share that data with the public. It also promised to donate a percentage of proceeds to oyster and forest rehabilitation.
