Zambian biodiesel producer looking to soy farmers for feedstock

June 26, 2018 |

In Zambia, local press reports that Copperbelt Energy Corporation has begun engaging with soybean farmers in order to secure feedstock for its biofuel production facility. Most soy in the country is used for animal feed while in surplus years it exports. However, drought early this year negatively impacted yields, dropping production to about 320,000 metric tons, when exports only kick in when production is above 600,000 tons. Farmers have been struggling to make market linkages and are often discourage by low prices even when the market is suffering from scarcity.
