State government taking deductions from staff salaries to pay for biofuel cookers

September 22, 2018 |

In Nigeria, the state governor for Cross River, Ben Ayade, is requiring a salary deduction of every civil and public servant in the state for the purchase of biofuel cookers and lamps, which staff are not happy about. This comes after signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Alvila Technologies Limited, supposedly a close associate of the governor, according to Sahara Reporters.

The Commissioner for Climate Change, Alice Ekwu, told Sahara Reporters that the deductions would span over a period of twelve months. A member of the Senior Staff Association warned that if the government went ahead to implement the deduction, workers would revolt, telling Sahara Reporters that “We are aware about the purported MoU and the plan by the state government to force workers to buy what they do not need. We are waiting for them to start it and we will see if this government will not regret it.”
