In Brazil, the National Council for Energy Policies has proposed boosting the country’s biodiesel blend to 15% by 2023, increasing gradually by 1% annually from the current 10% beginning in June 2019. The additional 5% blending would increase biodiesel demand by 85% between 2018 and 2023 leading to production of 10 billion liters from the current 5.4 billion liters. The country’s biodiesel industry has struggled to diversify towards feedstocks other than soy oil partly due to lack of policy-driven demand, leaving the national biodiesel industry to push for ever-higher blending mandates.
