EU ethanol prices at 22-monthl highs but margins not yet strong enough to boost production

December 24, 2018 |

In the UK, Platts reports that Ensus could potentially restart ethanol production during Q2 2019 if margins recover enough to justify the move. With both Ensus and Vivergo shut down, ethanol prices have jumped up to 22-month highs, but even so, margins are only inching towards viability for many. With tariff treatment on ethanol post-Brexit unclear, prices may not increase enough to justify the importation of ethanol from the UK into Europe, however. Ethanol imports from the US may end up being the cheaper route to bring down prices in the European market.
