Thailand cuts off US-origin DDGS due to beetle infestation

January 14, 2019 |

In Thailand, Reuters reports that the government has halted imports of US-produced DDGS unless it has been “properly fumigated” due to two shipments in August and November that had been infested with Khapra beetle. Thailand and the US are negotiating with gas is best to use for the fumigation—Thailand wants methyl bromide while the US wants to use phosphine—so until the decision is reached and processes can be put in place to comply with the new Thai rules, trade has stopped. Thailand has become the fourth-largest importer of DDGS following China’s trade spat with the US that blocked imports.
