#2 Cardboard café opens in Bombay

In Bombay, a café made entirely from recycled cardboard has opened. Designed by architecture firm Nudes, the café aims to demonstrate the material’s versatility. Benches, tables, and high chairs are all made from cardboard slotted together.

“Building with cardboard meant constant exploration and inquiry into material performance,” Nudes tells dezeen.com. “The table tops are impregnated with wax treatment to prevent water absorption and facilitate ease of maintenance. We are hoping that this space evolves into a vibrant hub for dialogue and conversation on the role of design, material & technology in protecting the earth’s resources towards a sustainable future.”

Similar projects are underway globally. In California, a Los Angeles store is using recycled cardboard tubes for insulation. In Amsterdam, Fission Factory has prototyped a housing system made from cardboard that can be assembled in just a day.
