Engineered Strains for Fermentation: The Digest’s 2019 Multi-Slide Guide to n-Butanol from Biomass and CO2

December 3, 2019 |

$2.25/gal or less than $3/gge (gallon gasoline equivalent) sounds pretty good, doesn’t it? That is one of the goals of a project that is working on developing engineered clostridial strains and a fermentation process that can directly utilize cellulose and fix CO2 for n-butanol production from lignocellulosic biomass.

Shang-TianYang from Ohio State University gave this illuminating presentation at the DOE’s BETO 2019 Project Peer Review that details the barriers they’ve had so far, their technical approach, butanol production from cellulose, alcohols production from CO2 and H2, metabolic engineering, mixed culture fermentation, and more.
