Cyprus government getting flack for higher fuel prices after boosting biofuel blend

January 21, 2020 |

In Cyprus, local press reports that the government is coming under fire for boosting the amount of biofuel blended with fuels in order to comply with the European Union’s Renewable Energy Directive that calls for 10% renewable energy in transportation by 2020. Last Friday that blend was increased to 7.3% from the previous 5% which in turn has increased fuel prices by 2.5 cents per liter. Cyprus still has the fifth cheapest fuel among the EU-28 even with the higher price included at around 20 cents lower than the average.
