Paradigm BioAviation announces $120M aviation biofuels project in Illinois
In Illinois, Paradigm BioAviation announced plans to build a $120 Million facility in Bloomington-Normal designed to transform municipal solid waste into green electrical power and alternative liquid fuels for the transportation and aviation industries.
Construction is slated to begin in 2014, after completing the zoning and EPA permitting process in 2013. Production of green power will start in 2015, according to the company.
The facility will be built in two phases; the first consisting of 1) a Materials Recovery Facility which will process recyclables; 2) a gasification plant to produce Syngas for use in producing electrical power; and 3) a pilot gas to liquids plant capable of handling 15 tons of garbage each day.
The second phase is the construction of a full scale Gas to Liquids plant, which is projected to come online in 2017. The plant will create over 700 direct, indirect and induced jobs, produce 5 MWhe of green electrical power and 8 million gallons of alternative liquid fuels.
Illinois State University will partner with PBA on the development of this project. ISU joins Hensel Phelps Construction Company, Orlando, Florida and Southern Research Institute, Durham, North Carolina, as teaming partners in the venture. Hensel Phelps, with annual sales in excess of $3 Billion, provides a wide range of construction services to the federal government and private industries and will be responsible for the design, engineering and construction of the facility.
Southern Research Institute is currently using Municipal Solid Waste in two gasifier pilot operations at their facility in Durham, and will provide Municipal Solid Waste to Syngas gasification equipment for green electric power production and its proprietary Gas to Liquids system for the conversion of Municipal Solid Waste to liquid fuels. Southern has over 25,000 hours of experience in operating thermochemical conversion systems for governmental and commercial clients.
Illinois State University will analyze the local supply of feed stocks, conduct sustainability and economic impact studies, and perform quality control testing and certification of liquid fuels.
