Hawaii’s PUC approves HELCO PPA for 21.5MW of eucalyptus-fired power

In Hawaii, the state’s public utilities commission has approved a power purchase agreement between Hawaiian Electric Light Company and Hu Honua Bioenergy, who has built a 21.5MW power plant on a former sugarcane plantation using eucalyptus as feedstock. HELCO will pay 25.3 cents per kWh during 20 years.

Brazil's FINEP grants $1.2M for eucalyptus biofuels research

In Brazil, the Brazilian Government’s Science and Technology Ministry’s FINEP agency has granted FuturaGene $1.2 million for it advanced plantation forestry for bioenergy research that is aimed at boosting yield in woody species, principally eucalyptus, through genetic modification. The company’s parent Suzano Papel e Celulose will provide another $2.3 million for the project.
