Top Story: U.S. ethanol production will rise 20% in 2007 to 6.48 billion gallons, according to a report issued by the Renewable Fuels Association.
Producers: Plans for groundbreaking have been announced for a $65 million biodiesel facility in Massachusetts….A joint venture announced completion of a pilot plant that will produce 3 million gallons of biodiesel in Ohio….A lawsuit filed by a citizens group to block construction of a new Ohio ethanol plant has been dismissed….In Illinois, farmers are expecting a bumper corn and soy crop.
International: A marketing agreement has been signed for a 8 million gallon biodiesel plant that opens in September in Argentina….In Australia, a government minister said that using genetically-modified canola oil would not provide a benefit to the Australian biofuel industry….In Brazil, a 2 percent mandate for biodiesel that will be implemented in January 2008 promises to dramatically increase Brazilian biodiesel production….Thailand’s fourth largest sugar producer, has reduced its annual ethanol target to 6 million gallons from 11 million, citing reduced demand….In Japan, Malaysia and the Japanese governments are expected to sign a biofuels pact this week that will provide technology assistance toward the development of Malaysia’s biofuels industry….In Taiwan, the first Taiwanese biofuel project has been canceled.
Policy: Public sector oil companies in India will be required to purchase biodiesel under new guidelines released by the Indian government….the US government will purchase sugar and sell it for ethanol production, under the terms of the 2007 Farm Bill.
Research: Science magazine published an article concluding that switching from fossil fuels to biofuels will add more carbon to the atmosphere, destroy primary forests, and destroy economies….an algae-to-biodiesel demonstration plant, which uses carbon dioxide from coal as an energy source, is ready for testing in Kansas.
