Top Story:Â Biofuels Digest has released its 2007 Oil Independence Report, highlighting the fact that Nebraska, South Dakota and Iowa to become net energy exporters. The report is based on the production capacity of current ethanol plants and plants under construction and state-by-state gasoline consumption figures. Upon completion of plants currently under construction, Nebraska, South Dakota and Iowa will produce more ethanol fuel than each state consumes in gasoline fuel. Ethanol production is equivalent to 260 percent, 217 percent and 189 percent of their annual gasoline fuel consumption, respectively.
Producers:Â USA Today reports on efforts by Georgia to take leadership in the ethanol industry, as well as a comparison of Georgia’s biofuel tax incentive policies compared to New York and South Carolina….The Star-Tribune reports on the rejection of an ethanol plant near Minneapolis. This is the second such municipal rejection of an ethanol plant in Minnesota this year. The proposed plant would have produced 40 million gallons of ethanol per year….In Maryland, Worcester County Commissioners have questioned the water sourcing for a proposed ethanol plant….In South Carolina, planning commissioners took the first step towards approval of a biofuels plant in Chester County….In Hawaii, Hawaiian Electric released its biodiesel purchasing policy, pledging to do business only with palm oil produces who have not destroyed natural forest. . Hawaii Electric also called for more research on jatropha and kukui nuts as biodiesel feedstocks….The world’s largest soybean biodiesel plant opened in Indiana. The plant will produce 80 million gallons of biodiesel per year.
International: Bangchak Petroleum announced plans to invest $30 million in a new biodiesel plant in Thailand. The plant will have a capacity of 25 million gallons per year….In New Zealand, farmers have seen fertilizer prices rise by 80 percent since May, and are blaming biofuels….Kazakhstan formed a Biofuel Association as the first step towards establishing a biofuels industry.
Research: The US took another step forward in development of cellulosic ethanol this week when The University of Florida chose a site owned by Florida Crystals for a $20 million cellulosic ethanol plant that will produce up to 2 million gallons of ethanol per year….Soyatech released its Biofuels Index for the second quarter of 2007. Ethanol planned capacity in the US increased 91% to 13 billion gallons, while ethanol capacity under construction increased 199%, from 2.417 BGY to 7.226 BGY.
