World’s largest soybean biodiesel plant opens in Indiana
The Wabash Plain Dealer reports on the opening of the Louis Dreyfus soybean biodiesel plant in Indiana, which at 80 million gallons of biodiesel per year is currently the world’s largest soy-based biodiesel plant. Louis Dreyfus, with its tripartite concentration shipping, agriculture and energy, is poised to become a major global player in biofuels. Although this new US operation involves soy-based biodiesel, the company has significant sugar operations in Brazil and could figure prominently in the sugar-based ethanol industry should the 50-cent per gallon tariff on Brazilian ethanol be lifted in the US. Dreyfus is also a major producer and trader in the US of biofuel feedstocks such as corn, sorghum, and canola (rapeseed). A player worth watching.
