Virginia pilot project underway to convery poultry litter to biodiesel
In Virginia, a project to produce biofuels from turkey and chicken waste enters the pilot phase. A demonstration farm in the Shenandoah will be the site for the test of a mobile poultry litter collection device that will convert the waste to biodiesel.
Poultry waste is on ongoing concern in Virginia where litter from the $830 million industry has been blamed for water pollution in the Chesapeake Bay. The test is funded by $1 million in grants from the federal government, the Virginia Poultry Federation, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and other interest groups.
A prototype unit was successfully built and tested at Virginia Tech earlier this year.
