60,000 hectares of sugarcane earmarked for ethanol production in The Philippines

60,250 hectares of new sugarcane areas have been identified that will produce 71 million gallons of ethanol, to meet the biofuels targets set by the Biofuels Act. The act also requires a national conversion to a B1 biodiesel blend that will increase to B2 in February 2009.

Philippine Agricultural Secretary Arthur Yap said the country will require 10 refineries with at least 7 million gallons annual capacity to produce the targeted ethanol volume.
