Leaders at Asia Pacific Economic Council summit fail to agree on climate change declaration
Reuters reported that leaders at the Asia-Pacific summit had failed to agree on a text for their “Sydney Declaration” on climate change and greenhouse gas emissions. Increasing reports have been coming out of the APEC meetings that China is pushing for the communique to focus on channeling support for UN initiatives in the area, while the US and Australia are pushing hard for bilateral or Asia-Pacific regional agreements.
Reports have been published suggesting that some developing nations are unhappy at the presence of climate change on the APEC agenda, and there is also some concern that President Bush’s upcoming climate change summit in Washington is directly competitive with UN efforts to broker a new global treaty or framework for emissions reductions.
