The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil said that five years of research are required before jatropha is economically viable as a biodiesel feedstock. The group noted that jatropha oil production yields are less than 1 ton per acre, and special facilities were required during crushing to prevent the escape of toxic vapors.
Jatropha has become a focus of development projects announced this month in India, Mozambique and Rwanda.

Comment on Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil. Their claims all negative and definitely untrue remind me of the report issued to newspapers in the USA at the beginning of the 20th Century by buggy makers when automobiles first appeared on the streets. The Malaysians had better solve their own problems of trying to push for palm oil biodiesel while their large plantation operators continue to sell palm oil as fast as they can to Chin and India for cooking oil use, making biodiesel production irrelevant. Perhaps they should visit their Indonesian neighbors more often to see some really goody yielding and less “dangerous” jatropha.
