New ethanol, biodiesel plant openings in Iowa and Indiana
In Indiana, Poet opened its 65 Mgy million corn ethanol plant in Portland. Poet now has 21 plants in operation and seven on the drawing board. The opening makes Poet, with 1.07 billion gallons of production capacity, the largest US corn ethanol producer. Archer-Daniels-Midland had previously been the market leader. Poet also has an additional 550 million gallons of corn ethanol production capacity under construction, and is entering the cellulosic ethanol business as a recipient of a recent $80 million demonstration project grant from the US Department of Energy.
In Iowa, the $50 million Western Dubuque Biodiesel plant had a grand opening. Iowa has become an emerging leader in biodiesel, although the state is best known as the runaway market leader in ethanol production.
