European industrial ethanol producers band to close ethanol import loophole

An article in Biofuel Review discusses efforts in the EU to close an ethanol import loophole. Importers are claiming that ethanol blends are subject to Chapter 38 of EU regulations, which exempt it from the restrictions and higher duties placed on pure ethanol which must be classified as agricultural products and imported under Chapter 22 regulations. Industry advocates are calling for an “ethanol is ethanol” policy and for closing the loophole favoring blends.
