Mascoma, Aventine advancing new ethanol plants to completion; 326 Mgy in new capacity
Cellulosic ethanol start-up Mascoma now has three plants in planning or construction. The company has announced plans for a 500,000 gallons demonstration plant in New York (opening late 2007), and 5 million gallon plants in Michigan (opening 2008) and Tennessee (opening 2009). The Tennessee and Michigan plants are planned to eventually expand to 50 Mgy each. Mascoma, which began at Dartmouth College, uses Thermoanaerobacterium saccharolyticum for its cellulose-to-sugar conversion.
Oneida County in New York has scheduled hearings for the New York plant, and the University of Tennessee recently gave the go-ahead for the Tennessee facility which will be developed in partnership with Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the University.
In Indiana, Aventine Renewable Energy announced that it received an air construction permit for construction of its Mt. Vernon ethanol plant. The 226 Mgy corn ethanol plant will be built in two phases and phase one will commence construction this month.
