Ford has called for the accreditation of biofuels to stimulate production of environmentally-friendly biofuels, as well as more tax incentives to encourage use of the fuels. Ford executives stressed the need to avoid biofuels that cause deforestation or a shock to local prices for staple foods.
To date, biofuels have been accredited based on their energy performance and consistency. Programs such as BQ-9000 from the National Biodiesel Accreditation Program ensure quality biodiesel is being produced and distributed, but do not look at the environmental impact of biofuel production practices.
