Manitoba launches energy loan program to stimulate biofuels investment
In Canada, the province of Manitoba announced an energy loans program to stimulate development of biofuel and wind projects. The loans will have a maximum of $1.05 million with up to 25-year terms, administered by the Manitoba Agricultural Services Corporation.
Winnipeg, the capital of Manitoba, is the largest Canadian city to date to trial biodiesel in city buses.
Earlier this month, the Canadian federal government announced a $500 million fund in support of next-generation biofuels demonstration projects.
The Harper government has its base of support in the Western prairie states, where support of biofuel production is strong owing to the extensive farming interests in the western provinces. Meanwhile, Canada has exhibited leadership at the municipal level in conducting biofuel trials.
Prime Minister Harper recently returned from the APEC conference in Sydney where regional leaders issued a statement in support of UN initiatives on climate change.
