US lawmakers to tackle 2007 Energy Bill; battle looms over CAFE standards

In Washington, lawmakers expect to proceed this week with a conference on the 2007 Energy Bill, or new legislation to reconcile differences between the House and Senate versions of the Bill. A battle is looming over CAFE standards increases which are opposed by US auto makers.

Detroit’s objective to to encourage conversion to ethanol, which requires far less conversion cost. GM has been heavily promoting E85 ethanol, including its E85 Days of Sumer promotion. More than 6 million flex-fuel cars have been sold in the US, although few use E85 due to availability issues.
