In Canada, construction is about to begin on Canadian Bioenergy’s 60 Mgy conola-based biodiesel plant northeast of Edmonton. The $90-million plant will commence operation in 2009. Canola is proving popular in the northwest; a 8 Mgy plant in Washington state is nearing completion.
Canada has been active in biofuels development since the federal government annoucned increased focus on biofuels last year. Manitoba, Saskatchewan and the federal government have announced incentives, mandates and research support.
The Canadian government recently announced a B2 mandate effective in 2012, representing an increased biodiesel demand of 210 million gallons.
