Underwriters Laboratories certifies E85 fuel dispensers; may prompt sudden increase in E85 availability

Underwriters Laboratories have announced certification requirements for E85 dispensers. E85 pumps could be certified by UL this year. The absence of certification for E85 pumps was a major reason that E85 had not gained greater acceptance among fuel retailers, as many retailers did not want to install a pump and then re-install another if the pump did not meet UL certification standards.

Last week, the Illinois Corn Marketing Board projected a massive increase in E85 availability after Underwriters Laboratories certifies ethanol pumps as safe, which is expected by year-end, A spokesman for the Board said that major fuel dispensers such as Wal-Mart and Kroger, are waiting on certification before expanding E85 availability.

US ethanol consumption has risen 46 percent in the past 12 months, according to Bloomberg.
