Malaysian joint venture to pursue jatropha biodiesel production in Davao City
In Malaysia, Davao City Multi-Culture Development and the state-owned Palm Oil Industrial Cluster have agree to sign a joint venture to produce jatropha-based biodiesel. Planting would commence in January 2008 on 60,000 hectares in the Marilog and Paquibato districts in upland Davao City. POIC would provide equipment and financing, and would hold a 40% stake in the venture.
The Plantation Industries and Commodities Ministry recently announced that it will launch a jatropha pilot project in Sabah. The location will be in Kota Marudu. The Ministry pledged to expand cultivation, especially in poorer areas, if the crop proves to be viable. The Ministry also pledged to introduce new methods for oil palm production in Sabah that would increase productivity.
