Pioneer Carbon to produce biogas in Kenya
In Kenya, Pioneer Carbon announced plans to produce biogas for domestic cooking. The company has already led carbon-trading projects such as installing an electric-generation capability for Muhoroni Sugar Company that permitted it to supply its own power and sell excess power to Kenya Power and Lighting. Last year, Mumias Sugar Company began production of 30 MW and sold the resulting carnon credits to Japan Carbon Finance.
Kenyan biofuel investment and construction is expanding rapidly. The Green Power East Africa jatropha biodiesel plant in Nairobi is attracting much attention from local farmers, as jatropha continues to be a hot topic across the continents.
D1Oils and Sun Biofuels are offering seeds and technical assistance to farmers in several countries in return for production contracts. D1 has a $90 million joint venture with BP, and has 338,000 acres under jatropha production with plans to plant more than 80,000 acres in Swaziland, Zambia, Madagascar, Mali and Malawi. The company recently signed with Keygene to obtain exclusive rights to Keygene’s applied jatropha research.
