UK government to cut red tape, stimulate use of waste vegetable oil for biodiesel
A proposal was launched by the UK’s Environment Agency and Waste & Resources Action Programme to cut red tape that keeps 75,000 tonnes of waste vegetable oil from being transformed into biodiesel each year. Martin Brocklehurst, Head of External Programmes at the Environment Agency, told MHW Magazine: “Biodiesel derived from waste vegetable oil is carbon-neutral; it reduces waste and improves resource efficiency. We have worked with the biodiesel industry to develop this proposal, a Quality Protocol for waste vegetable oil, which will save businesses the time and costs associated with meeting waste regulations.
The UK has a 2.5 percent biofuel mandate for 2008-09 rising to 5 percent in 2010-11.
