Canada’s Ocean Nutrition Canada sells fish oil biodiesel; could reduce ocean dumping of waste fish extract

In Canada, Ocean Nutrition Canada is selling biodiesel made from fish oil. 21 million gallons of waste fish oil are produced annually by the Alaskan fishing industry, of which 13 million gallons are dumped into the ocean.

Waste oil is increasingly in focus as a feedstock as commodities prices rise. An EPA-funded project will use recycled kitchen oil to run fire engines and other public-safety vehicles in Rio Rico and Nogales, Sonora.

Last week, a proposal was launched by the UK’s Environment Agency and Waste & Resources Action Programme to cut red tape that keeps 75,000 tonnes of waste vegetable oil from being transformed into biodiesel each year.
