Senegal President cuts cabinet, government salaries as food and energy costs soar

In Senegal, President Abdoulaye Wade pledged to cut the number of cabinet ministers and cut government salaries, as the country struggles with energy and food price increases.

Recently, Senegal  proposed a $2 billion oil refinery and biofuel power plant. The project would provide 60,000 barrels per day of Jet fuel, diesel, butane and gasoline for local markets and export to Europe and the United States. Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade has been outspoken in his support for investment in biofuels for Senegal and West Africa. African ethanol production is projected at 160 million gallons in 2007 and numerous biodiesel projects are in development.
