US House expected to pass Energy Bill today; oil association chief says ethanol requirement will “break the nation’s fuel supply system”

In Washington, the House Democratic leadership prepared for a vote today on the Energy Bill.

According to the latest reports, a 36 billion gallon biofuels mandated target for 2022 was in the bill, as well as $13.5 billion in new taxes on the oil industry, a requirement for 15 percent use of renewable energy by utilities, and a 40 percent increase in CAFE standards by 2020.

American Petroleum Institute President Red Cavaney was quoted in the Associated Press as saying in a letter to House leaders that the ethanol requirement “sets up a new crazy-quilt of boutique biofuels that could strain, indeed break, the nation’s fuel supply system.”
