Welsh “sniff patrols” to detect cars running on untaxed cooking oil; targets “mobile fish and chip shop” odor to nab tax evaders
In Wales, a “frying squad” has been formed to detect motorists using $2.49 per gallon cooking oil instead of $8.17 per gallon conventional diesel to power their cars. The units was formed after local stores were forced to ration cooking oil due to sharp sales increases. sharp increase in the amount of cooking oil sold in stores.
Car owners have been adding methanol to the cooking oil to power their vehicles. The police squad went on “sniff patrols” to find vehicles that smelled like a “mobile fish and chip shop”. Evading petrol taxes can result in a seven-year jail sentence in the UK.
Meanwhile, eslewhere in England, eight buses have been converted to biodiesel, and 15,500 passengers who use the route have been given containers to collect used cooking oil which can be exchanged for discounted bus travel. Argent Energy; Stagecoach, the ULK transport company; and East Ayrshire Council are managing the pilot program which will be employed on the transport companies Service 1 route from Stewarton to Darvel via Kilmarnock.
