Synergy Biofuels to build waste vegetable oil biodiesel plant in Virginia
In Virginia, Synergy Biofuels will invest $1 million in a waste vegetable oil biodiesel plant in Pennington Gap, and will commence operation in March 2008.
Although Virginia has received more publicity for the 320 Mgy Smiling Earth Biodiesel plant proposed for the Chesapeake Bay area, the state has been home to smaller facilities featuring an exotic range of biodiesel feedstocks.
Researchers at Old Dominion University in Norfolk have demonstrated a small-scale production of a B10 blend from algae oil. Also, a pilot project was launched this year in the Shenandoah for a mobile poultry litter collection device that will convert the waste to biodiesel. A prototype unit was successfully built and tested at Virginia Tech earlier this year, funded by $1 million in grants from the federal government, the Virginia Poultry Federation, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and other interest groups
Poultry waste is on ongoing concern in Virginia where litter from the $830 million industry has been blamed for water pollution in the Chesapeake Bay.
