MSNBC profiles Sen. John McCain’s flip-flop on biofuels
US Senator John McCain’s statements on ethanol were featured by MSNBC in a story on the Senator’s flip-flop on biofuels.
“Ethanol is a product that would not exist if Congress didn’t create an artificial market for it. Ethanol does nothing to reduce fuel consumption, nothing to increase our energy independence, nothing to improve air quality.” (November 2003).
“I support ethanol, and I think it is a vital alternative energy source not only because of our dependency on foreign oil but its greenhouse gas reduction effects.” (August 2006).
Earlier this year, Senator McCain said that he opposed government subsidies on ethanol, and became the first major 2008 Presidential candidate to do so, although he did not comment on the Renewable Fuel Standard which governs mandates on ethanol usage.
