NY City council member proposes all NYC diesel fuel contain 20 percent biodiesel by 2013
In New York, Council member James Gennaro was profiled in the documentary “Fields of Fuel”. Gennaro was interviewed about his biodiesel bill, which would require that all diesel fuel in New York City must contain at least 20 percent biodiesel by 2013.
In New York City, diesel policy affects consumers via the home hearing oil market rather than the automotive fuel market. New Yorkers burn 500 million gallons of fuel oil per year for heating.
New York apartment buildings and residents are turning to biodiesel for heating fuel. An article in the Christian Science Monitor projected that thousands of New York buildings will convert this winter, and that buildings in Boston and Philadelphia will begin to switch as well.
Last month in New York City, Metro Terminals was granted $10.86 million in tax-exempt bond financing and tax benefits in support of its Metro Biofuels biodiesel project. The company will construct two biodiesel plants in Brooklyn that will produce biodiesel and heating fuel.
