FPL Energy expected to announce 4 Mgy cellulosic ethanol plant at US Sugar facility in Hendry County, Florida
In Florida, observers are speculating that FPL Energy will shortly announce a 4 Mgy cellulosic ethanol plant at the US Sugar facility in Hendry County. The plant would use citrus waste as a feedstock.
FPL is a subsidiary of the FPL Group which also owns Florida Power & Light. The project promoters say this is the first ethanol plant in the world to use citrus waste, and will use an ethanol process developed by the USDA in the 1990s to convert citrus membrane and seeds into ethanol. Previously, the waste was converted into livestock feed.
The plant will be constructed in Hendry County, near Lake Okechobee, FL which is also near to the heart of the state’s sugar cane industry. The plant will also experiment with sugar cane.
