Green Fuels proposes 20 Mgy biodiesel plant in Indiana
In Indiana, Green Fuels has proposed a 20 Mgy biodiesel plant on a 32-acre site in Fulton County. The company has requested a rezoning hearing with the County to advance the project. The proposed feedstock for the new facility was not disclosed.
Indiana has been more widely known as a corn ethanol state, however there has been significant efforts in biodiesel in the past year. Benefuel and Seymour Biofuels will invest $25 million to build a 10 Mgy solid-catalyst biodiesel plant in Seymour that will open in 2010. Solid-catalyst biodiesel uses a solid acid reactor to convert a wide variety of fats and oils into biodiesel without extensive pre-processing.
Traditional biodiesel is produced by adding methanol and sodium hydroxide to a narrower range of fats and oils. To date, IFP has been the only widely-known firm to succeed in making solid-catalyst biodiesel on a commercially viable basis.
